The Need to Know: Safety Rails and Impact Ratings

Safety rails are special types of safety guards used in industrial facilities to protect people, structures and machinery from heavy forklifts. They are usually installed around a pallet rack, near a wall, around a work cell or along a production line. Their high visibility and excellent impact resistance make them ideal for protection applications.
When shopping for a safety rail, there are many things that facility owners need to consider to choose the right rail for their specialty protection needs.
The most important consideration?
The impact a safety rail is capable of resisting. In other (more technical) words, the impact resistance rating of the safety rail.
The impact resistance rating of a safety rail is the quantitative measure of the impact the rail can deflect while maintaining integrity. It is specified in pounds and standardized at a specific forklift speed.
Here at KD Equipment, we sell safety rails with an impact resistance rating of 10,000-pound, standardized at 4 mph.
The standardization part of the impact rating is critical to understand here. Different safety rail manufacturers use different speed standards during testing which must be factored in when purchasing a safety rail.
You simply can’t look at one safety rail that claims it can withstand 10,000 pounds and compare it to another that claims it can withstand 8000 pounds and assume the former is a sturdier solution. To know this, you must also know what speed standard was used in the testing of each rail. Speed can make a big difference.
It’s worth mentioning here that not all safety rails available in the market are marked with impact resistance ratings. As such, you should avoid purchasing these products because they are usually of sub-standard level.
One last thing to keep in mind: impact ratings of safety rails do decrease with each successive hit.
It’s therefore important that you replace your old and damaged safety rails in due time to avoid any inconvenience.
