Loading Dock Safety: OSHA Recommendation and Some Tips and Solutions

In storage facilities, about one in four accidents happen at or near loading docks.
What makes the loading docks so vulnerable to accidents?
A mix of high activity, bumping forklifts, exposure to elements, elevated platform and strong buzz of industrial equipment.
Talk about the perfect (deadly) fall!
It’s therefore, imperative that facility owners take every possible step to ensure safe operations at their loading docks.
What can facility owners do to make their loading docks safer?
Let’s see what OSHA recommends in this regard.
OSHA leading the way!
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that wall openings designed with more than a four-foot drop should be equipped with fall protection barriers. Since, almost all loading docks are at least 48 inches tall, they are subjected to the OSHA safety recommendation.
Even those loading docks that may fall technically outside the “four-foot drop” requirement, are advised (although, not recommended)to install some sort of fall protection solution, as injuries are just as possible at lower elevations as they are at higher elevations.
There is one important point worth mentioning here: facilities can use visual barriers instead of physical barriers if they find that barriers are restricting the flow of their operations.
This alternate recommendation is also established by the OSHA.
Some examples of fall protection solutions that facility owners can use at their loading docks include:
·Cut-to-size safety rails
·Low elevation machine guards
·Bollards (as visual barriers)
·Dock roll-off barrier levelers
·Removable dock safety gates
Aside from fall protection solutions, facility owners can also use dock door sealing products to minimize infiltration of outside elements that may cause workers at the edge of dock area to slip and fall. This solution although is not included in OSHA recommendations, it nevertheless serves to reinforce loading dock safety.
